Stella Artois Chalice, India

Commission to create an Illustration for the carton packaging and glass for the Stella Artois Limited Edition Chalice, India.

The design direction was provided by the team at Jones Knowles Ritchie.

“The purchase of a Limited-Edition Stella Artois Chalice helps provide 5 years of clean water to someone in the developing world. This year’s collection features hand-crafted designs inspired by Mexico, India and the Philippines. $3.13 helps provide 5 years of clean water for 1 person in the developing world. Stella Artois will donate $3.13 to Water.org for every Limited-Edition Stella Artois Chalice sold in the U.S. between 1/1/18 and 12/31/18, up to 300,000 chalices.”

Carton Illustration

The illustration had to convey the spirit of water as well as be visually distinct as ‘Indian’. Indian women carrying water was the theme for this year.

I choose a symmetric layout with 3 women (a lucky number) with highly stylised pattern of water and fish swirling around them to convey movement and clean water.

The initial draft was hand drawn with ink, then vectorised in Illustrator to keep a hand-drawn feel. The colour palette was suggested by JKR to reflect the brief (water) + gold for the the gold in the Stella Chalice.

The pattern on the chalice glass itself needed to repeat around in a single colour and compliment the logo while utilising the characters from the main carton design.
